Tag & Release

Tag & release is a form of research to compile data on the process of migration and growth of fishes by attaching a tag on the fish and releasing it. The tag & release program was inaugurated by JGFA in October 1985. This program is the only all- inclusive tag & release activity targeting game fish in Japan.

Handbook and Tags

Up to now, about 100,000 game fishes of 65 varieties have been tagged and released. Of all the fishes released, roughly 1,000 of 26 varieties have been recaptured. Tag & release activities implemented by JGFA created quite a sensation in the fishing profession in Japan and drew considerable attention at the same time. We are hoping that this program will permeate the game fishing circle with its abundant knowledge and that many more anglers will take the initiative to participate in this program.
